Four Curriculum Levels

Level 1

Beginner Level

  • Write simple, isolated phrases
  • Express immediate information, such as the “here” and “now”
  • Understand simple, isolated statements
  • Understand short and slow speech with pauses and repetition
  • Understand very short, simple texts, one phrase at a time

Level 2

Intermediate Level

  • Write about contexts in familiar situations
  • Deliver basic rehearsed presentations on familiar topics
  • Understand short directions, instructions, and descriptions
  • Infer at the vocabulary level
  • Find specific information in simple, everyday material

Level 3

Social Proficiency

  • Provide supporting points
  • Take listener and cultural context into account
  • Understand radio and television
  • Read with a large degree of independence
  • Read texts in a wide range of professional topics

Level 4

Academic Proficiency

  • Take audience into account
  • Write well-structured, complex text
  • Use precise and accurate grammar
  • Listen between the lines
  • Identify or infer opinion, intention, and feelings of writer
